Project-Based Learning (PBL) at A-School

Future-Ready Learning for the AI Era

In today’s AI-driven world, students need more than knowledge — they need to think critically, create innovative solutions, collaborate effectively, communicate with confidence, and act with character and purpose. At HKBUAS Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School (A-School), our whole-school Project-Based Learning (PBL) programme develops these 5Cs through authentic, interdisciplinary challenges.

Our PBL Program extends learning beyond the classroom, developing self-directed, self-regulated, and reflective learners who can apply knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes to solve real-world problems and thrive in the 21st century.

Stage-Appropriate Approaches

We adopt different curriculum frameworks at different stages to best suit students’ developmental needs:

Junior School (G1–4)

PBL is planned using the Understanding by Design framework. Teachers design units with clear learning goals, essential questions, and meaningful performance tasks, helping younger students build strong foundations in inquiry, collaboration, and reflection.

Middle School & beyond  (G5–9)

PBL is powered by human-centred Design Thinking. Students work through a structured 4D process to solve authentic social problems:

  1. Discover users’ pain points through empathetic interviews and observation

  2. Define the problem via stakeholder mapping and “How Might We…” questions

  3. Develop solutions using Lotus Blossom and cross-pollination techniques

  4. Deliver by prototyping, testing, and pitching impactful solutions

This approach nurtures creativity, ethical decision-making, and real-world problem-solving skills while teaching students to use AI tools responsibly as a supportive resource.

From Learning to Impact

The PBL journey culminates in our vibrant PBL Showcase Day — a carnival-style celebration where students across year groups present their learning and solutions to the school community. Through whole-school PBL, A-School students become confident, compassionate, and competent learners ready to shape the future.
